Planning White Paper
Government has set out proposed reforms to the Planning System in its recent White Paper but, for rail, there are many unanswered questions. An initial summary is attached.

The non-intrusive crossing - three years old and still not approved!
This simple and neat solution to the needs for temporary crossovers for planned engineering works, short single line sections or temporary loading sidings is still not approved by Network Rail for use on their network.

RFOA top enhancements
The Rail Fregiht Operators Assocaition has (March 2007) submiitted a list of the top 16 enhancements to the Department for Transport for inclusion in the High Level Output Specification planned for publication in the summer of 2007.

Cross-Channel rail freight charges
Cross-Channel rail freight charges - by Eurotunnel, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and other charges - add up to an uncompetitive nonsense, and fail to comply with the EU's First Railway Package designed to encourage rail freight.

Eddington Transport Study
The Eddington study is a significant study and its implications will take time to be worked through by the industry and Government. A summary of the key recommendations and comment on the impact for rail freight is attached.

Solent - Midlands Advancement of Rail Transport
lead imageIn advance of the TIF funding announcements expected before Christmas 06, the South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA) have published a brochure restating the case for the gauge enhancement of the Southampton to West Coast Main Line rail corridor (SMART) to enable the rising number of 9’6” high containers to be economically transported on standard rail wagons .
