Network Rail must spend much of its profits on enhancements that can benefit freight
press release 29.11.06

In one month’s time rail freight services through the Channel Tunnel will stop
In one month’s time rail freight services through the Channel Tunnel will stop – unless agreement is reached between the train operators and Eurotunnel. The 30 November deadline is fast approaching, at which time the minimum usage charge for freight (up to now funded by the DfT for the UK side) ceases. Eurotunnel is quoted as saying that charges are still much too low; EWS has threatened to stop services because it says it cannot afford the new level of charges.

Despite the Stern report there's only month left for Channel Tunnel rail freight

Crossrail must comply with planning laws

Rail freight - the easy way to reduce carbon emissions from surface transport
A wake up call by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee to Government on emissions is welcomed by the rail freight industry. The Rail Freight Group has been campaigning for several years for Government to recognise the environmental benefits of rail freight, where the DfT’s own report on ‘Rail Contribution to the Energy Review’ shows that rail freight produces eight times less CO2 per tonne.km than road freight. 8 Aug 2006

A new European Commission Report reviewing progress on implementing the first railway package presents clear evidence of the connection between liberalisation, competition, service quality improvements and growth in rail freight traffic, and confirms the EC view that liberalisation must be pursued with increasing vigour.

The success of the UK railway structure 23.02.06 ref 2006.2
At a seminar in Brussels on 23 February 2003, leaders of the UK rail indsutry and freight customers delivered a clear message to other member states and EU officials - 'the UK rail reform was highly beneficial, particularly for freight.'
